Residential sector end use model

A residential sector end use model (REMG) was developed to capture sector specific energy demand dynamics. REMG has an explicit representation of five energy functions (space heating and cooling, lighting, water heating and appliances) in households and their main drivers for 26 world regions. Within each region, the model addresses heterogeneity by distinguishing between urban and rural population classes and furthermore disaggregates between income quintiles of the respective classes. The bottom-up energy model is used to attempt to understand and subsequently project world-wide residential energy use. Including this detail has as advantage that end use demand can be related to climate conditions, account for heterogeneity in developing countries and capture regional differences. Moreover end use specific efficiency and fuel switching opportunities, and structural change can be accounted for.

Input data

An extensive collection of historical and regional water heating, cooking, space heating, appliances and lighting energy use shares.

Description: The ResidentialSectorEndUse.pdf contains the description of the REMG model and the application in IMAGE. The functions derived on the residential data collected are described briefly in this document and more thoroughly in the Data Technical Report.pdf

How to use the module

The derived functions can be related to regional floor space per capita, GDP, cooling degree days (CDD) and heating degree days (HDD) projections to model regional residential sector end use demand of energy.
