Model transparency and diagnostics

The challenge

Energy-economy models and IAMs have grown in complexity and produce different results. At the same time, their results are increasingly used for climate policy advice. Questions about whether these models are “fit for purpose” are raised.

Key questions raised

  • How can we improve transparency of models and their results?
  • What are the strengths and limitations of different model approaches?
  • How well do we do in fostering the strengths and reducing the limitations in ADVANCE?
  • How can we enhance confidence of users in IAM results?

Results achieved

ADVANCE enhanced the transparency of existing IAMs, provided open-access data sets and methodologies to evaluate as well as improve IAMs and energy-economic models, and documented the progress beyond the state-of-the-art achieved by the project.
