Impacts of mitigation policies in the EU and beyond

Challenge

Bringing ADVANCE IAMs and energy-economy models close to the policy-making procedure and proving how model improvements can increase the suitability of the models for contributing to policy impact assessments.

Key questions raised

  • Are IAMs and energy-economy models relevant for policy impact assessments? If so, how and why?
  • What are the model features and model detail (sector, country etc.) that can enable a better policy discussion?
  • What are key elements of policy impact assessments and how can each model specialise in providing insights for the policy debate and contribute in a complementary way in the modelling toolbox of the impact assessments?

Results achieved

Based on the methodologically enhanced ADVANCE models, we explored climate mitigation policy options in the post-Paris framework and thus the impacts of the INDCs and their consistency with the 1.5 °C and 2 °C targets.
